Preparation Instructions

Preparation before upper blepharoplasty

  • A surgeon assesses the patient’s eyelid and asks about the patient’s desired eye shape to choose the appropriate technique.
  • The patient brings sunglasses on the surgery day to prevent dust, and should not drive.
  • Stop smoking and drinking alcoholic drinks for at least 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Stop taking medicines affecting blood coagulation.
  • Inform a surgeon about health conditions.
  • An anesthetic is used, so NPO is unnecessary.
  • No make-up and contact lenses on the surgery day.

Aftercare

  • Apply cold compression at the eyes and forehead during the first 1-2 days to allow vasoconstriction and minimize bleeding and swelling.
  • Apply warm compression on days 3-5 to relieve swelling.
  • Keep the wound away from water for 3 days.
  • 24 hours after surgery, apply ointment, prescribed by a surgeon, in the morning and evening. Before applying, clean the wound with a clean and damp cloth or cotton pad and wipe it dry.
  • Take an anti-inflammatory drug as prescribed by a surgeon.
  • A surgeon schedules the stitches removal after 5-7 days.
  • Keep the head elevated during the first 5-7 days after surgery to minimize swelling.
  • Avoid eye strain during the first 7 days.
  • No spicy or strong-flavored foods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the wound visible after undergoing upper blepharoplasty?

A surgeon stitches the incision with a very fine thread to allow the least visible incision. During the first 7 days after surgery, the incision and thread are possibly visible. However, after removing stitches and recovering from swelling, the wound begins to fade and is hidden in the crease.

Epicanthoplasty and upper blepharoplasty use the same technique, so they can be processed simultaneously. However, if the patient has double eyelids with epicanthic fold, only epicanthoplasty can be performed.

In the case of uneven eyes, there are two cases:

  1. In the case of myasthenia gravis, a surgeon will perform the surgery with the affected eye to allow clearer vision.
  2. In the case of asymmetrical eyelids, a surgeon will perform the surgery to balance both eyes.

Blepharoplasty is the technique where the excess eyelid and fat can be removed. The risk of  loose crease is very low. Meanwhile, the suture technique is suitable for a person with thin eyelids, but a higher risk of loose crease.
